vol.1 issue1 Second Semester 2007-2008

USPF President visits Taiwan to form MOA with Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health. University of Southern Philippines Foundation president Dr. Alicia Cabatingan, and Dr. Chun-Yu Chen, Ching Kuo Institute president in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China signed an agreement of academic cooperation between the University and Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health last October 17, 2007. The agreement embodies the objective of academic promotion between the two institutions through faculty and student exchanges, cultural changes development, and cooperative programs. 

USPF basic education admin goes to Singapore. The DIWA Learning Systems, Inc. sponsored a group of 19 school directors and principals from Visayas and Mindanao to the second Singapore Learning Adventure (SLA) held last November 13-16, 2007.  USPF’s directress and principals Mrs. Basilides Bandajon, Mrs. Aurora Briones, and Mrs. Elnora Almario were among the participants of the training held at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Singapore.  The training centered on the relevance of globalization and the expansion of personal perspectives through exposure and advanced educational system and diverse culture. A lecture on “Understanding Globalization: Strategies for Classroom Use” was given by Ms. Kit Phey Ling and Ms. Chua Bee Leng.  Moreover, relevant tours to the Classroom of the Future (COTF), Science Center, Sentosa Island on a cable car, Underwater World, Images of Singapore, and Musical Fountain Show were part of the experience.  Mr. Bong Saquing gave a motivational talk to conclude the whole learning experience. He shared the beginnings of Singapore and gave a note on how one can learn from it to help improve one’s nation. (*additional information are gathered from the TrailVentures Dec2007 vol11 issue1)

USPF SPED goes to Hong Kong. The USPF Special Education (SPED) graduating students under Dr. Lucila Bonilla, coordinator for academic affairs & dean of the college of education (COED), had an international exposure in Feb 26-29, 2008 in Hong Kong (HK) for a culminating activity. SPED HK Educational Tour introduced the 12 graduating students with their instructors to the Child Development Centre (CDC) at Matilda with head teacher Ms. Louise Thomas, and to the Watchdog Early Learning and Development Centre at Midlevels with director Stella Wong. SPED international tour is a brainchild of Mrs. Lourdes Jereza, vice president for external relations.

PACUCOA visits USPF. Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) visited USPF on Jan 28-Feb2, 2008 for the preliminary look into the basic education department of both Lahug and Mabini campuses as well as the school of business and management (SBM) and the college of computer science and information technology (CCSIT). The preliminary visit headed by PACUCOA chairman Dr. Jaime Buzar with 9 member accreditors inspected the areas of focus: faculty, instruction, laboratory, library, physical plant and facilities, student personnel services, and social orientation and community involvement.

USPF-OAR conducts general election. Overall officers of elementary, high school and college levels gathered and elected the pioneering set of officers for the Little Alumni Club, Young Alumni Club, and Pre-Alumni Circle on July 25, 2007 at the university Moot Court. Graced by the university president Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan, the general election is conducted by OAR director Kathleen Solon-Villaneza with the full support of the respective club advisers from all basic education and tertiary levels.

USP-AAI supports outreach program. USP Alumni Association Incorporated (USP-AAI) actively involved in the university’s outreach program. Headed by USP-AAI president Mr. Luis Canete, the alumni association sponsored the school needs of ten children of barangays San Jose and Bacayan, the partner communities of the university. Mrs. Rosario Sequitin, chairperson of the social work department, is the director of the university outreach program. 

USP-AAI awards Outstanding Alumnus for 2008. Mr. Aldrico Manus, CPA received the outstanding alumnus award in Feb 17, 2008 in time of the general alumni homecoming. Mr. Manus who embodies knowledge, integrity and industry, the core values of the university, graduate of USPF Bachelor of Commerce class of 1960 is a past president of PICPA Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chapter.

USPian places 3rd on CPA licensure exam. Denmar Bacalso Cantillas, CPA of BSA class of 2007 placed 3rd in Oct 2007 Certified Public Accountant licensure examination conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). As a student, “Denmar” is a recipient of the Presidential Gold Medallion and the Don Agustin Jereza award in USP’s Finest, champion in the 2nd BDO & Co and National Federation of JPIA in 2005, and 2nd placer of the outstanding accounting students of the Philippines. Mr. Cantillas graduated Summa cum Laude in 2007.

USPF-NAA sponsors 5th Scientific Lecture. USPF Nurses Alumni Association together with their active teacher alumna and college dean Mrs. Norma Hinoguin sponsored and organized the 5th Scientific Lecture held last Feb 13, 2008 at the Main Function Room.  Entitled “Aegis Egypti: Bite Me Not”, resource speaker Dr. Jose Antonio Quitevis emphasized the cause of dengue and gave preventive measures.   USPF-NAA is composed of the pioneering class of USPF Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates and first batch of board examination passers.

  • HS class of 1972 reunited at Mt. View with Mrs. Aurora Briones. 
  • HS class of 1980 gathered on Dec 1 at the Grand Majestic Convention with Mrs. Basilides Bandajon. 
  • HS class of 1958 celebrated the golden anniversary with a reunion held on Dec 8 at the Casino Espanol Cebu. 
  • HS class of 1975 dined at the Rizal Hall, USPF for a Christmas reunion held on Dec 22. 
  • HS class of 1987 reunited on Dec 27 with university president Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan.
