They are considered important part of the university community, contributing to the school’s thrust of promoting cultural diversity and academic excellence.
OISSP chairperson Dr. Bryant C. Acar created vibrant programs including the courtesy visit, the city tour, and the intercultural appreciation lecture.
OISSP’s first program, the orientation and integration, was held on December 1, 2009 (Tuesday) at 10:00 am, seven new international students visited the offices of the university top executives.  The courtesy visit aimed to expose them to the different offices of the University and meet the university officials. The international students were warmly welcomed by the office of the president – Dr. Alicia P. Cabatingan; VP for Finance – Engr. Rolando Villa; VP for Comptrollership – Mr. Geronimo Sta. Ana; and VP-External Affairs – Mrs. Lourdes Jereza.
Another essential part of the program of the OISSP, the city tour, was held last December 15, 2009. The purpose of the tour was to expose the international students to the rich cultural heritage of the Filipinos as well as to cater inter-cultural appreciation among them. At least five stops were made by the students with the tour organizers: first, the Casa Gorordo where the international students were amazed with the vast collections of antique house wares are housed; second, the San Diego ancestral house where they were bedazzled by the the yakal-made house; third, the Cathedral where they were briefed with the historical background of the religious collections; fourth, the Museo Sugbu were they appreciated the rich collections of the eleven galleries; and fifth, the towering climb to Taoist Temple which gave them so much excitement and challenge. Nevertheless, the tiresome journey was rewarded with great scenic view at the topmost part of the temple. For a half day busy affair, the international students ended up feasting on a sumptuous dinner mania at Pier One IT park discussing their realization that there are so much things to learn about Philippines and its rich cultural heritage along with the values of respect, acceptance and appreciation.

Lastly, the lecture on Intercultural Appreciation: Getting to Know More about India and Taiwan was organized on February 9, 2010 9:00 -12:00 noon at the Moot Court. An interactive lecture and discussion was done by our very own international students: India by Ramandeep Singh and Taiwan by Li Jo Pei with the High school students through the Asian History Classes and World Literature. The objectives of the activity were to develop intercultural appreciation among students; provide venue for the international students to share their culture; and provide enhancement for students’ learning about other countries straight from the international speakers.  Interesting topics like history, geography, famous personalities, religion, beliefs, clothing, marriage, scenic spots and education were elaborately discussed. Gracious enough that the two speakers included a short tutorial of their language. A demonstration was done on their dances and songs.
One of the missions of USPF is to develop its students to become globally competent. With this, students should be exposed of learning different culture and learn to appreciate the uniqueness and complexity of international culture. The development of intercultural appreciation is a step towards the development of being globally competent.
The next countries that will be featured will be Korea and Sudan on July 2010.

USPF, an International Students-Friendly School. Education for international students is a critical component of the 21st- century learning. Most educational institutions are challenged to open its door for multicultural education. The increasing demands of accepting international students have prompted the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) to legitimize multicultural education, facilitating the creation of programs and practices that promote cultural diversity and equal educational opportunities for international students.

The USPF has created the Office for International Students and Special Programs (OISSP) to prepare an appropriate program for the integration of international students into the academic and social life of the University. The OISP has launched the campaign making the university an - International Students-Friendly School. With many opportunities for involvement on campus, international students have the chance to intimately learn about variety of culture. The OISP strongly advocate in providing assistance to the international students in order to make their stay in the campus an exciting experience of a lifetime.

The concept of making USPF as international students-friendly school will provide support for the international students in their academic and cultural adjustments; offer opportunities for involvement in the University community; and create a venue for intercultural appreciation for the international students to share their culture.(For more information, please contact Dr. Bryant C. Acar, OISP Chair at Tel nos. 4148773 local 144)

USPF celebrates Teachers’ Day. In response to the call of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, the Office for International Students and Special Programs organized Photo Contest, Photo Exhibit and Inspirational Talk on October 1, 2009 at the Lobby of Don Agustin Jereza building with the theme “My Teacher, My Hero.”
Among the objectives of the celebration are to generate widespread awareness and support for World Teachers’ Day; use the occasion to celebrate the unique role and service that teachers play in guiding families, strengthening communities, and building the nation; revitalize the image of teaching as a vocation by increasing public awareness on the value of teachers in Philippine society and national development.
The call of UNESCO has urged all possible cooperators to pay tribute to our teachers by preparing simple, creative, and meaningful activities that will affirm and celebrate the value of teachers to the community and nation. The USPF has responded to this call. A photo contest, exhibit and inspirational talk were organized. The photos were personally captured by the students as they deliver and execute their own interpretation of the theme, “My Teacher, My Hero.” Immortalized in the photos were images of teachers in action. Part of the program was the inspirational talk of Mrs. Elnora N. Almario (Principal, Elementary Department, (USPF). She inspired the audience of her experience as a teacher.
It is hoped that through this activity, the celebration of World Teachers’ Day will be raised to the same level as that of Mothers’ or Fathers’ Day and our teachers will be accorded the recognition and appreciation they deserve in playing their central role in guiding our children, the youth, and even adults, through the lifelong learning process.
